Game Reveiw: 2048

This is a single player game that only came out about a month ago called 2048. This is a puzzle game where tiles with numbers in must be matched to another tile with the same number to create a bigger number whilst removing the other two tiles. The overall aim of the game is to create the biggest number tile possible trying to get to the tile numbered 2048. The game was released on March 9, 2014 but an Italian man called Gabriele Cirulli. This is an addictive and easy to learn game that keeps the user trying to be their personal best. I particularly like this game as it is a good brain teaser and gets the player thinking. The game was originally made for computers and could be played online, but can now be played on mobile platforms. This game has become incredibly popular and is played by many different people. The graphics in this game are quite basic but flow well when a player interacts with them. As bigger numbers are made by the user the colours of the tiles change and begin to glow. As there is only sound in the mobile version of this game I will be referring to what I could hear when I played. When a tile is moved incorrectly a single toned bell like sound rings and when a tile is moved correctly at dual toned bell like sound rings. Again these sounds are incredibly basic but they do give the game that extra little bit of energy. The controls for this game when played on the computer are the arrow keys this moves the tiles around, but the controls on an apple mobile device are just swiping a finger in the direction that they want the tiles to move.

I would rate the graphics in this game a 5 out of 10 as they have a good fluid motion and are extremely basic. Whilst being able to be run well on a computer they are not as good on a mobile device as the motion is not as smooth. The colours a vibrant and have a good contrast with the back ground.

The sounds in the game only get 3 out of 10 as they only work on mobile devices and are extremely limited. They also get a little irritating once they are played over and over.

Over all this game gets a score of 8 out of 20, even though it is a fun game to play the graphics and sound let it down.

Game Review: Red Crucible 2

this is a first person shooting game that has been around for at least 2 years, as this game isn’t very well known and wasn’t advertised not many people knew about it and discover it by accident. This game runs only on computers and laptops in an internet browser as it allows players from all over the world to play together. I play this game as it is fun and enjoyable. As soon as a user finds this game in a browser, a login screen pops up whilst playing dramatic, tense music that keeps repeating. The log in menu gives the user to log in with an existing account, create a new account or just play as a guest. The next screen a user is faced with gives the option of automatically being put in a random match against others, going to a main area for users to test out weapons and other purchasable items. And the last icon is to search through the different games that are occurring or to create their very own game.  A user can play many different types of games such as team vs. team, last man standing etc. It is a very easy game to understand and start playing and the controls are pretty much what you would expect them to be, arrow keys to move mouse to aim and shoot. The graphics in the game are quite detailed as they have many different colours and blending shades as well as shadows of certain objects.

I would score the games graphics a 6 out of 10 as they are quite detailed but not the best I’ve seen. The game has a wide variety of colours that change fast when shots are fired.

I would score the sound in the game 6 out of 10 as it creates a good atmosphere for the player even though there are very limited sounds. One of the things I noticed when playing was if there are a lot of sounds being created at once it does become distorted and unclear for the player.

Over all the score given to this game is 12 out of a possible 20, I really enjoy this game and the game play is exciting and simple and is overall a good game as it is free for anyone, unless players wish to purchase items in game.

Our lesson

In a lesson we had been asked to write some reviews of retro games. I decided to play most of the more well know retro games as I knew a little about them. As you may see in other blog post, I will explain my gaming experience of a few retro games.

Our assignment

We had been given an assignment to create a plan of a LAN gaming set up, The scenario gave us some basic resources such as a few games consoles and computers. we had to create and purchase items to create a small LAN club. We had the choice of either upgrading the equipment we already had or getting new equipment. I think I will use all the resources I have already and buy some internet equipment and games. I will provide a clear plan of how all the equipment will be set up.

Game Review: Asteroids

Asteroids is a game where  the object of the game is to shoot and destroy asteroids and saucers while not colliding with either or being hit by the saucers' counter-fire. The game becomes harder as the number of asteroids increases, and they become faster. For each asteroid destroyed the player will receive points that add  up and can be seen on the screen. On screen it also shows the user how many lives they have left and what level they are on.

I would rate the graphics in this game a disappointing 3 out of 10. Even though these graphics were seen as a breakthrough when the game first came out, but as I am playing this and reviewing it in my personal opinion. The graphics are extremely basic and are only available in black and white.

I would rate the sound of the game 4 out of 10. Again as I am reviewing this game in my opinion, I believe that these sounds are quite basic but they do occur they represent exactly what they are meant to, for example, When an asteroid is destroy there is a small explosion.

Overall I would give this game a rating of 7 out of 20 as it was in my opinion a relative boring game with poor graphics even though it was seen as a break through when it was released.

Game review: Tetris

Tetris is a puzzle game where a players objective is to complete full solid lines with no gaps using different shapes that are able to be rotated and moved whilst they are falling down. when a complete line is made it will disappear and the rest of the lines will fall down to the next level. If any of the shapes reach the top of the screen then its game over. This is quite a challenging game but still enjoyed by many different people.

I would rate the graphics a 5 out of 10 even though they are 2D the shapes and overall layout is bright and colourful and clear to see.

I would rate the sound a 6 out of 10 as it is a fast pace sound that continues throughout the game. The sound track of the game consists of many different  sounds that sound very electrical.

Overall I would rate the game a 11 out of 20 as I didn't really like the gameplay as I found the objective a little boring after a while. The graphics of the game were very attractive and were easy to see yet the sound of the game got a little irritating once it had been playing for too long as it was on a loop.

Game review: Sonic the hedge hog

Today i played a old retro game called  Sonic the hedgehog. Sonic the hedgehog's objective is to stop his enemy Eggman and foil any plans of world domination by running around big maps really fast collecting gold rings trying to unlock the next level. once a certain amount of levels have been completed the play can play a boss battle against doctor Eggman. After a boss battle he user may unlock a new world and challenges till they are able to complete till they unlock the next boss battle. this sequence carry's on till the user completes the game.

I would rate the graphics in this game a 7 out of 10 as there are many different variations of colours. The little pixels of the game are still the main way of showing computer graphics at the time when games like this and others such as asteroids were coming out. It is quite impressive how quickly the pixels have to change when a character is moving at the speed it is.

I would rate the sound of this game a 6 out of 10 as there are so many different sounds within the game on top of the sound tracks that can be played through out the levels.

Overall I would rate the game 13 out of 20 as it is an enjoyable game to play as well as the graphics and sound being an acceptable quality.

In this task we were split in to groups and given a decade that we had to research some of the gaming consoles and games that were created in this time period. My decade was 1990's.
